Twitter fined €450,000 by the DPC
The Irish Data Protection Commissioner (“DPC”) announced earlier this week that it had issued a €450,000 fine to Twitter for delays in notifying the DPC of a data protection breach and for failure to adequately document a breach. For more information you can read the DPC’s statement on the matter at https://www.dataprotection.ie/en/news-media/press-releases/data-protection-commission-announces-decision-twitter-inquiry.
This serves as a reminder to all companies that they need to have appropriate arrangements in place to ensure timely notification and documentation of breaches when they occur. When a breach occurs, the relevant controller needs to make an assessment of the risk associated with the breach and it is vital that this is appropriately documented and also that it is logged in an appropriate breach register.
These obligations in respect of breaches are in addition to the other ongoing GDPR requirements which include obligations to review policies and procedures on a regular basis, conduct training, maintain processing registers, and conduct due diligence on data processors.
